The following is not correct:
17 Jan 70
SP4 Philip E. Smith Jr [G]
P injured
Ba Xugen Province
121 AHC
#67-16485
A/C was on recon mission when it was hit by RPG and made a forced landing.
Phillip was Huey crew member with the 121 AHC which did not have any OH-6A Loaches. He was in the Blue Tigers Flight Platoon. He got shot as we were inserting ARVN troops (flight of 5 Hueys). His Aircraft made it out of the landing zone. The last I heard was that his aircraft was headed somewhere where medical help was available. I believe it was a Navy ship or facility. All 5 Heuys were shot up put Phillip was the only one killed. We were told that a bullet came in behind his vest plate and richceted back thru his heart. The night before the mission we were looking at the flight schedule for the next day. It indicated that we were going into a hostile area. Phillip said; "I am going to get a purple heart tomorrow."
