Corrections/updates:
Aircraft should properly be designated as an O-1D, not an L-19.
Company patch is incorrect, the patch depicted is one used after the company became a Mohawk unit.
Dick was shot down by two Cambodian Royal Air Force T -28s who flew approx 5 miles inside Viet Nam airspace to intercept him. Each flew on Dick's left and right wing tips for approx 2 minutes, broke left and right and flew in large circles coming back on his tail and blowing him out of the sky. Of course, the Birddog was unarmed. The attack was hushed up as we were trying to cultivate the Cambodian government.
Dick was in radio contact with ATC and described what was happening. The tracks of all three aircraft were verified by ATC en route radar.
Dick and I were in OFWAC 63-1 together, and went to Vietnam together, from Ft Rucker in early 1963, in the newly formed 73d Aviation Company (Airplane Surveillance Light).
