Ten Soldiers were killed in a Combat Aviation Brigade, 10th Mountain Division CH47D helicopter crash on 5 May 2006 at approximately 2011 local in Afghanistan. During Exfil operations conducting a two-wheel landing the aircraft made at least three attempts to pickup personnel from a confined mountain PZ. On the last attempt the aircraft pitched up and over as the rotor systems separated from the airframe. The aircraft initially impacted the terrain approximately 50 meters down slope, coming to rest approximately 182 meters below the PZ. Post crash fire and secondary explosions ensued totally destroying the aircraft. The CH47D was not equipped with a flight data recorder.
