On May 28, 1967 Richard Veach(G) was killed at Bear Cat when his huey crashed on take off due to a mechanical failure. He was with the 200th ASHC.(Pachyderms). The aircraft flipped over and started to burn. The CC and pilots were helped out of the wreckage, the pilot had burns to the head and arms as I remember. Veach was trapped in the wreckage and was seen crawling on fire from underneath when he crawled into a ditch that had filled with JP4 and ignited everything. It all happened so fast, we couldn't save him. I was there and saw everything except the actual crash although I did see the AC come to a rest and start to burn. That's when we rushed to help the crew out. Ammo started going off and we had to take cover, that's when I saw Veach crawl out. The response crews came and extinguished the flames and they put his body on a stretcher and took it away. I'll never forget it, it affected me for the rest of my life. I was just about to turn 19.

The 200th was a Chinook co. but Veach was on a test flight of our 6 or 3 ship which were Hueys.
