There was insufficient evidence to indicate that mechanical malfunction, environmental factors, pilot error or a combination of these factors contributed to the accident. The accident cost the lives of three U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to G Company, 52nd Aviation Regiment, 1st Battalion, 214th Aviation Regiment. The flight was a routine pilot proficiency training flight from Stuttgart Army Airfield to Coleman Army Airfield. During the approach to Coleman Army Airfield, the aircraft began a rapid, unrecovered descent and made contact with the trees which resulted in the aircraft crashing.
