I am a little confused how to list material that has not been added to this site. The 179th Avn Co (ASH) Lost a CH-47A (will have to look up the tail number) on April 26, 1968 somewhere in Vietnam. Several soldiers were killed and all were from the 179th. Basically what happened was the helicopter went down in an unsecured area for a combiner box failure. The combiner was replaced and the maintenance officer / pilot CW4 Cruell waived the mandatory 30 minute hover due to nightfall coming fast tried to fly the helicpter back to Camp Holloway. In flight they suspect the #2 input bearing failed in the new combiner box. All on board were killed. I was the technical inspector for the 179th from March 67 until February 1968. This crash happened after I was in Germany in 1968 and sadly occurred on my birthday. The only soldier to survive was SP6 George Motley. He was the technical inspector and as I understand it, he declined to fly until the hover check was completed. If the owners of this site want more information, please email me.

I assume that your father's name is Lawrence Edward Apt with the birth date of 9/17/41? It's a coincidence that you posted a message because I have been trying to find the information myself. If I find anything, I can let you know but I will need your email address. You can either register to become a member of the forum or you can email me direct at cowboywaydesign@aol.com
