I was stationed at Camp Humphreys with the Blackcats in July 1977, when 498 went down. I was trying to fix the intermitten failure the t generators were having the day before. I supposed to be on the helicopter the next day, to have a better chance to troubleshoot, when it went down, just like SSG Adams. I never knew for sure what happened that day, but I thought that they made an emergency landing because of the generator problem, and then got shot at. It could have been my fault for not fixing it the day before. If anybody can help me to find out, I would appreciate it. Mr. Schwanke? kmiamike@yahoo.com

The Acft flew into N Korea by accident, boarder guards fired at the Chinook. The PIC landed the flyable Acft to inspect for damage inside NK. A truck with 12-N Korean soldiers was coming toward the Acft. The PIC decided to take off and escape. The Co Pilot refused to go and stayed on the ground. The soldiers shot the Acft down. The two SGTs and the Pilot were killed in the crash. The Co Pilot was kept for a week and returned to US Control. Glenn Schwanke Said: No one left the aircraft or refused to stay on the ground. Engines were in the process of being shut down and blades had not stopped turning when we realized that we were in the wrong place. Engines were restarted and an attempt was made to return back to South Korea. 50 Caliber MG and small arms fire brought the aircraft down. All 4 crewmembers were on board during this time. Joe Miles, Ron Wells, and Robert Haynes and families are in my prayers.
