Joe was my classmate. We were both in F4. I went to the Memorial Service at Bragg. I still have the bulletin from the service. The other soldiers killed were CW3 Donald S. Murray and CW2 Michael J. Roche. Joe was the Commander of B Company, 1st Battalion, 82nd Aviation Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division when he died. He originally branched Infantry out of West Point and got his Ranger Tab, then his CIB with 1st ID in Desert Storm. He branch transferred to aviation shortly thereafter.

I was in the unit at the time. CPT Reed asked me to sit in on his AMB that night as the Assistant Div Cdr was there. At the end of the brief I told him he did a good job. The last I saw Mike he was headed to the bathroom. My company was relieving them on station when the 2 acft under NVGs collided while at a hover. It was a night live hellfire shoot. Both the LT and CPT Reed were new and receiving instruction from Don and Mike who were both IPīs. From a distance I saw the impact. The LT escaped from his burning acft with just a scratch under his eye. CW3 Murray was flying with CPT Reed. CW2 Roche was flying with the LT. Great guys who are missed today.

CPT Reed was in my Scout Class in Flight School. Unfortunately, unfortunately he left behind 2 or 3 young kids.
RIP

Mike was my father. Joe and Don were paired together, while my father and the new LT were together. All still missed to this day.

Mike and I were in the same battalion in Hawaii (1-25 ATK). He gave me my orientation ride and was also one of the IPs who helped train me as a young LT - back when we still had OH-58 A/C on active duty. He is missed.
